Un BBQ annuel tout spécial

Image
A Special Annual Barbecue

Image
Every year, following a long winter and a few weeks during which dormant tree buds and flowers burst open in a flurry of activity, the Greater Montreal Area springs alive to welcome visitors from all over the world during its summer festival season.     This is also the season when the South Shore Saints , the only men’s Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) chapter in Quebec, host an annual barbecue to celebrate the accomplishments of the chorus with family and friends and/or commemorate individuals that have made a lasting impact across the years.     Last year, we commemorated the passing of Don Gillespie , the last of our surviving founders, by raising funds for a plaque in his name, which is now displayed at the BHS headquarters. Luigi (right), with best friend Benoit (left) at the 2024 Saint-Lamberts Festival This year, we invite family, friends, and guests of all ages to join us on the evening of Wednesday, June 18 for a splendid mid-week reset, as we share memorie...

Food and Song for the Soul (Spaghetti Supper)

Image
To all of our friends and family, both known and as yet unknown : It’s that time of year again ! The chorus will be hosting a Spaghetti Supper on Saturday, May 31, 2025.  If you’ve already been to one, you know what to expect.  And If not, chances are, you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise ! (For your interest, see here , here , here , and here .) Why spaghetti ?  For one thing, it’s one of the most popular dishes in the world.  Growing up in Southern California, my favorite restaurant was the Spaghetti Factory.  When my wife and I got married in Japan, where Italian cuisine is a mainstay, we booked a trattoria near Komazawa Olympic Park for our wedding.  Except for a time when I adopted a paleo diet, spaghetti has remained one of our family’s simplest, hearty, and satisfying meals.  Given its popularity among people of all ages, it is arguably a globally quintessential soul food.  It reminds us of home, fami...

Reflections: Barbershop Is Love

Image
On Saturday, November 23, 2024, The South Shore Saints Barbershop Chorus celebrated a memorable annual show, “ Barbershop Is Love .” This year, the chorus took the unusual step of opting out of the Fall District Contest and Convention t o focus on the show . Using the extra time gained, our director Alan Briand and assistant director Steve Wheaton regularly helped us hone our songs, while Morgan Hayes LaCroix coached us on several occasions to improve our song interpretation. The change of schedule apparently led to a number of positive outcomes at showtime. Firstly, the extra preparation seemingly allowed us to focus while staying relaxed. I noticed that we remained calm even when we were backstage, which allowed us to fully enjoy the performance of our guest quartet  SKARmony . (This was not the case from my memory of previous shows .) I for one will not soon forget listening to Both Sides Of The Fence involving Alan Briand and SKARmony ! Secondly , the extra w...
