Sixty-five Years of Fun and Magic

Image
On Saturday, November 22, 2025, the South Shore A Cappella Chorus (affectionately known as the South Shore Saints) celebrated its landmark 65-year Anniversary -  A Journey Through Time - one of its most successful in recent memory.   Several factors likely contributed to the success:  1) The chorus secured Roulette as its guest quartet, well before they had been crowned Harmony Queens in 2024. Roulette - 2024 Harmony Inc. Champions 2) It hosted the Harmony eXplosion camp sponsored by the Northeastern District (NED) of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) for the first time ever in Quebec, at Saint-Lambert International High School on the South Shore. Harmony eXplosion Camp: Saint-Lambert International High School 3) The chorus made a skillful jujutsu move, turning the tense US-Canada relations into an opportunity to take time off from competing at NED conventions, to focus on our annual show. 4) T hree new members - Robert Lepage (baritone), Michel Girard (Bass), and...

A Super Spaghetti Supper

Image
On a beautiful autumn evening last Saturday, September 27, the South Shore Saints (aka Chorale A Cappella South Shore) held their first and only Spaghetti Supper of the year.  Post-pandemic, we have held this fundraising event biannually, once in the spring and again in the fall, to cover registration fees for members participating in the spring regional and fall district conventions, respectively. This year, however, the chorus decided not to attend the spring regional convention in Lake George, NY, in large part because more than a few members were hesitant to travel across the border due to tensions with our neighbours to the south. And because attending the fall district convention is contingent on having qualified in the spring (which we had done for the past 3 years running, returning with the most improved chorus award each time), we had suddenly lost our justification for holding our cherished Spaghetti Suppers.  Yet every seemingly unfortunate event usually comes with...

Be Our Guest !

Image
May 21, 2025 On a cool spring evening, the South Shore Saints hosted a Guest Night at Saint-Paul's Church in Greenfield Park, Quebec.  We welcomed three enthusiastic visitors, Jonah, from Kingston, and two visitors each named Michel from the greater Montreal area.  We had a great time creating 4-part harmony with them, and look forward to their return ! Dear reader: Have you ever dreamed of singing a cappella ?  Come visit us any (or every) Wednesday evening to hear the ringing overtones we create in the main hall !   Concerned about not being able to read music ?  No worries, most of us learn using learning tracks ! Wondering what happens during our rehearsals ? Most sessions run from 7:30 to 10 PM, with a 10-minute break around 9 PM.  When preparing for contests (May and October) or our annual fall show (November), our directors invite coaches with expertise in song interpretation to help members elevate their level of singing and emote more naturally. ...

Score 3 for the South Shore Sains Chorus at Spring 2024 NED Division Convention

Image
Earlier this month, from May 2 to May 4, the South Shore Saints attended the Northeastern District (NED) Spring Convention/Contest of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) in Warrensburg, where BHS choruses/quartets (men’s, ladies, and mixed) in the Mountain and Western Divisions showcased their talent. Much as in the past two years, it was well-attended by singers from all throughout the Northeastern US.   In addition, a contingent of choruses from the Mid-Atlantic region, most notably the Alexandra Harmonizers  led by the irresistible Joe Cerruti , traveled up to the convention to perform on the post-contest show on Saturday, May 4. It is with great pleasure to report to you that for the 3rd year in a row, the South Shore Saints  won the Mountain Division Most Improved Chorus  award.   In addition to winning the Mountain Division Very Large Quartet (VLQ)  award, they also took home the Mountain Division Chorus Champion award—the f...
