Annual Barbeque: In Memory of Don Gillespie, Founding Member

Image
On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, the South Shore Saints hosted their Annual Barbeque . This year’s event was special, as it served as an occasion to honor the life of the late Donald (Don) William Gillespie , the last original charter member of our organization to pass away. We were most fortunate that his wife Cathy Gillespie , who made the trip from Ontario, shared her memories of Don with us among a packed house full of kindred spirits from all across the Greater Montreal region. The more than 100 guests who filled the hall Cathy Gillespie with photos and memorabilia of Don Gillespie Don Gillespie (left) When I first heard the news from Alan Briand  (our director, who sings  Bass ) earlier in the year that "Don" (who I had never known) had been the last surviving “Founding Father,” was a tenor, and had passed away on February 13 (having just turned 92), I could not help but feel an instantaneous kinship with him, for I too am a tenor and he had passed away on non...

2024 Spaghetti Supper, Saturday, April 13

It was Saturday, March 25, 2023. I was in the church standing atop the stairs looking down over the lower hall. I was taking in the view of the neatly set up tables, pristine white tablecloths covering them, and cutlery placed at each seat. And as I watched the members and friends of the chorus who were preparing the spaghetti, salad plates, and rolls, as well as those helping to distribute the bowls of chips efficiently and neatly on each table, I recognized that this event was part of a long tradition. I felt a sense of gratitude, pride, and humility of being part of a classy organization. According to Alan Briand, our Musical Director, the tradition began "as a means to help our members with contest expenses. Being a small chorus, we did not want anyone to miss the experience because of money.”  ( For those of you who are  interested in or thinking of joining us, every year in the spring, we travel down to Lake George, New York, to compete at the Western Regi...

A Night to Remember

Image
On the evening of Saturday, September 30, 2023, the South Shore Saints were invited to perform at a fundraising event—an Italian Night Spaghetti Dinner—sponsored by the Saint Raymond Parish in Candiac, Quebec.    Though this event was new to me, it was evidently not the first time the chorus had sung at the venue, an elegant, spacious, and well-equipped recreation/community center, with numerous rooms that could have served for our warm-ups. The relaxed manner of all our members seemed to portend a joyous evening of singing.   It was only a few weeks ago that Frank Kermit became the newest member of the chorus. Yet in that short amount of time, he made remarkable progress in learning our repertoire and infused the chorus with a big dose of passion and plenty of ideas.   On this night, clad in fashionably entertaining attire, he took to the stage to introduce the chorus—in Italian no less, drawing on his roots—to a sizable audience (nearly a hundred or more?). His wor...

South Shore Saints Spaghetti Dinner

Image
South Shore Saints Spaghetti Dinner on 23rd September 2023 This is one of the South Shore Saints signature events of the year.  It’s an occasion for us to express our gratitude to all of our friends and family who make it possible for us to pursue our most cherished pastime.  Naturally, members work hard behind the scenes, pitching in to help out in countless ways to make the event a success.    Since joining the Saints in 2021, I’ve attended this event twice.  The first time, I was awed by how well the event was organized.  I love how we all help each other out.  The energy our members bring to this occasion every time makes this humbly named event a unique spectacle year after year.  And this year’s supper was no less memorable.   Saturday Seventy-seventh Special Spaghetti Supper this year, on Saturday, September 23, 2023, was particularly special.  It marked the 77th birthday of our immediate-past president, Guy Filion.  It's har...
