Why We Love Spaghetti Supper in Autumn (September 28th, 2024)
Why We Love
Spaghetti Supper in Autumn!!
I first set
foot in Montreal as a new resident of Quebec on September 3, 2021. Looking
back, it was the best time of the year to arrive. The air was cool, the skies
wide open, the fresh harvest of produce at local markets bountiful, and the
fall foliage most dazzling. Naturally, autumn became my favorite time of the
year.
Although it is unclear exactly when the tradition began, the South Shore Saints have long held two Spaghetti Suppers every year as fundraisers. The aim? To help defray the registration fees for our members to attend the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) Contests and Conventions¾once in the spring at the division level, and again in the fall at the district level. (see the following blog post for more details: https://southshoresaints.blogspot.com/2024/03/2024-spaghetti-supper-saturday-april-13.html). While the pandemic forced the chorus to suspend this tradition in 2020 and 2021, the practice was resumed in early 2023, a year and a half after I had joined the chorus.
Since then,
I’ve grown especially fond of the Spaghetti Supper we hold in autumn, and not
only because of the weather, blue skies, great food, and brilliant leaves. First,
the need to hold a second event reminds us that we have already qualified to participate
in the fall contest. Second, because we have extensively practiced our new
repertoire by this time of year, we are far more relaxed than in the spring and
ready to perform more naturally. Finally, everyone—not only our
guests, but each of our members too—is secretly excited about winning the
biggest prize of the evening: a wine raffle that will easily keep the winner warm
throughout the protracted winters in Quebec.
And so, with the freshest tomatoes, vegetables, and/or meats of the season used in the home-made signature pasta sauces and salads prepared by our chorus members, the wide assortment of desserts that line the tables following supper, and the quality entertainment provided by the Saints and friends, it is little wonder why Spaghetti Supper in autumn is one of our most widely attended events of the year. For just 20$, it is simply irresistible!
