Chorale Barbershop / Barbershop Chorus

 C’est fou, mais cela fait déjà 10 ans que je suis membre de la Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), l’une des organisations les plus reconnues dans le monde du chant a cappella.   À l'été 2015, ma femme, notre fils et moi vivions en Virginie.  J’étais pigiste à domicile et je m’occupais de la maisonnée, mais la vie commençait à changer.  Notre fils venait d’être accepté dans une école prestigieuse, et ma femme venait de recevoir une offre de professeur à Montréal débutant en 2017.  Pour que notre garçon puisse terminer son éducation en Virginie, il a fallu que je… prenne mon envol hors de la maison.   Je devais donc trouver un emploi à plein temps.  Après sept années de travail à distance depuis le Texas jusqu’en Virginie, j’avais perdu un peu mes repères sociaux et j’avais besoin de me réintégrer dans la communauté locale.  Un soir d’été, en réfléchissant à l’activité la plus joyeuse que je pouvais imaginer et à la façon dont je pourrais ...

It’s hard to believe, but I’m already in my 10 th  year with the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), which is one of the pre-eminent organizations in the world of a cappella singing. In the summer of 2015, my wife and I were living in Virginia with our son. I was freelancing from home and cooking for the family, but circumstances were changing. Our son had recently been accepted to a prestigious high school, and my wife had just been offered a professorship in Montreal starting in 2017. To help our son finish high school in Virginia, I had to step up… or rather, step out… of the home. I needed to get a full time job. But having worked remotely from home for 7 years since relocating from Texas to Virginia, I had lost my social skills. I needed to get involved in my local community again. With bated breath, we are ecstatic to announce that  the countdown until our 65th Anniversary Show begins today !  The Chorale A Cappella South Shore , also commonly known as the South Shore Saints , is a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) , and the only men's a cappella chorus in Quebec that strives to sing songs in the barbershop style, that is, songs arranged in four-part harmony (tenor, lead, baritone, and bass).   To our knowledge, we are also the only men's BHS chorus that sings French songs arranged in the barbershop style !  As our long history of community involvement since our founding in 1960 shows, we remain steadfast in serving our communities on the South Shore and Greater Montreal Area. On a beautiful autumn evening last Saturday, September 27, the South Shore Saints (aka Chorale A Cappella South Shore) held their first and only Spaghetti Supper of the year.  Post-pandemic, we have held this fundraising event biannually, once in the spring and again in the fall, to cover registration fees for members participating in the spring regional and fall district conventions, respectively. This year, however, the chorus decided not to attend the spring regional convention in Lake George, NY, in large part because more than a few members were hesitant to travel across the border due to tensions with our neighbours to the south. And because attending the fall district convention is contingent on having qualified in the spring (which we had done for the past 3 years running, returning with the most improved chorus award each time), we had suddenly lost our justification for holding our cherished Spaghetti Suppers.  Yet every seemingly unfortunate event usually comes with...

À nos amis et à notre famille, connus et inconnus : Enfin, les South Shore Saints (aussi appelés Chorale a cappella South Shore) organisent leur célèbre Souper Spaghetti le samedi 27 septembre 2025 !  Si vous n’y êtes jamais allé, vous ne savez pas ce que vous avez manqué ! Le samedi 23 août 2025, la Chorale a cappella South Shore (aussi appelé South Shore Saints), pour la deuxième année consécutive, a passé un moment inoubliable à chanter sur la scène centrale des Fêtes de Saint-Lambert. Notre répertoire comprenait de nombreux morceaux emblématiques couvrant près d'un siècle, de 1918 (After You've Gone) à 2016 (Ça va), dont « Pour un instant », le classique français d'Harmonium. Nous étions arrivés à peu près à la même heure qu'en 2024, vers 17 h 30. Curieusement, nous avons remarqué qu'il n'y avait pas de concerts cette année, contrairement à l'année dernière où des big bands et d'autres artistes avaient joué juste avant nos débuts sur la scène centrale. On Saturday, August 23, 2025, the South Shore a cappella Chorus (aka South Shore Saints), for the second year in a row, had a splendid time singing on center stage at the Fêtes de Saint-Lambert. Our repertoire included many iconic tunes spanning nearly a century from 1918 (After You've Gone) to 2016 (Ça va), including Pour un instant, the classic French hit by Harmonium. We had arrived at about the same time as in 2024, around 5:30 pm. Curiously, we noticed that there was no live music playing this year, in contrast to last year when there were big bands and other performers playing just before our debut on center stage. It was then we realized that this year, we were going to be the center of attention. A point worth noting is that singing a cappella can be tricky in an outdoor setting. Le 11 mai 2025, jour de la fête des Mères, nous avons appris la disparition accidentelle d'un ami proche de la Chorale a cappella South Shore (aussi appelé South Shore Saints), Kurt Boutin des Granite Statesmen de Nashua, dans le New Hampshire. Il avait chanté avec nous six mois plus tôt lors de notre spectacle annuel 2024 à Saint-Lambert, en tant que basse de du quatuor invité SKARMONY. Le 9 août dernier, une centaine de gens on tenu à célébrer Kurt ont assisté à un rassemblement de près de 100 personnes pour célébrer la vie et leur souvenirs de Kurt à Nashua. Plusieurs chanteurs et connaissances, dont Alan Briand et Steve Wheaton, étaient présents. Voici quelques souvenirs de Kurt Boutin partagés par d'autres membres qui n'ont pas pu assister à l'événement. Alan m'avait chargé de les rassembler, mais j'ai oublié de les lui envoyer. On May 11, Mother's Day, 2025, we learnt of the tragic loss of a close friend of the chorus, Kurt Boutin of the Granite Statesmen in Nashua, New Hampshire, who had performed with us only 6 months earlier at our 2024 annual show as the bass of our guest quartet SKARMONY. Two weeks ago on August 9, many who knew Kurt attended a gathering of nearly 100 people to celebrate his life in Nashua. A number of members, including Alan Briand and Steve Wheaton, were there for support. The following are some memories of Kurt Boutin shared by other members who could not attend the event.  I had been tasked to collate the memories by Alan, although I forgot to compile them together and send them to him. Le mercredi 18 juin 2025, les South Shore Saints ont tenu leur BBQ annuel.   Depuis mon arrivée a la chorale à l'automne 2021, mes souvenirs de cet événement estival sont teintés d'un mélange de nostalgie et de joie.  C'est peut-être parce que, lors des trois derniers BBQ, en 2023, 2024 et 2025, nous avions sollicité des dons pour commémorer les membres décédés respectivement au cours de ces années : Dick « Super Bari » Johnston (qui a chanté pendant 52 ans avec les Saints !) ; William Donald « Don » Gillespie, premier directeur des Saints et dernier des membres fondateurs de la chorale en 1960 à nous quitter ; et cette année, Luigi Calderisi, ancien trésorier du conseil d'administration et sans doute le membre le plus apprécié de la chorale.
